IPSGA (The System of Car Control)

What is IPSGA?

IPSGA is an acronym that stands for:

  1. Information: Keep your eyes peeled! Continuously gather and process information about your surroundings. Look out for other road users, road signs, and potential hazards. Sharing information with fellow drivers is also crucial. The Information phase continues throughout your journey – you should be continually assessing what you see and what you may need to share. Depending on what is around you, you may need to restart your application of the IPSGA steps.
  2. Position: Consider where you position your vehicle. Where will give you the best view and where will communicate your intentions best to everyone else around you. Position your vehicle correctly for safety, optimal vision, stability and communication. Remember your position helps to communicate your intentions to other road users.
  3. Speed: Not too fast, not too slow—choose the right speed. When approaching bends, use the “limit / vanishing point”* to determine your speed. And remember the safe stopping rule!
  4. Gear: Like a well-dressed driver, select the appropriate gear. It’s all about optimal performance. Shift gears smoothly, just like changing outfits for different occasions.
  5. Acceleration: Vroom vroom! Use your vehicle’s power wisely. Accelerate smoothly for safe and efficient progress. No need to break any land-speed records, though!

* We will talk about the limit / vanishing point in a later post.

How Does IPSGA Help?

IPSGA forms the foundation of Advanced Driving and Riding. Our skilled instructors will guide you through applying IPSGA on every journey. Here’s how it helps:

  • Roundabouts: Use the ‘Information’ step to maximise your progress through roundabouts.
  • Bends: Master the art of graceful curves.
  • Overtaking: Pass like a pro (safely, of course).
  • Motorways: Use your enhanced observation and communication skills to minimise changes of lane & speed.

Example: Right-Hand Turn

Let’s apply IPSGA to a right-hand turn:

  1. Information:
    • Check mirrors and assess surroundings.
    • Maintain good all-round vision.
    • Look out for other road users.
  2. Position:
    • Move your vehicle to the centre of the road.
    • Watch lane markings and potential obstructions.
  3. Speed:
    • Signal and brake progressively.
    • Adjust speed to complete the turn safely.
  4. Gear:
    • Select the right gear for power going into the turn.
  5. Acceleration:
    • Maintain speed through the turn.
    • After straightening your wheels, accelerate away.

Remember, IPSGA isn’t just a fancy acronym—it’s your journey guide, helping you toward safer, smoother trips!
